Netflix’s Away: Josh Charles to star opposite Hilary Swank in space drama

Josh Charles is returning to TV in Netflix’s upcoming space drama, Away.

Charles, best-known for his five season stint as Will Gardner on The Good Wife, will star in Away as Matt Logan, husband of Hilary Swank’s (Million Dollar Baby) Emma Logan. In the 10-episode series, American astronaut Emma leaves her husband and teenage daughter to lead  an international crew on a dangerous mission to Mars.

At home, Charles, an engineer at NASA, is dealing with the mission from Earth while also raising the couple’s daughter. After a life-changing experience in the show’s first episode, though, Charles learns the real cost of the family’s separation.

The series is written by playwright Andrew Hinderaker and is loosely based on an Esquire article by Chris Jones. Jessica Goldberg (The Path) will showrun the series. She will also write and executive produce with Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights). Matt Reeve (Felicity) and Ed Zwick (Nashville) will serve as executive producers as well, and Zwick will direct the series’ first episode.

In addition to Charles’ role on The Good Wife, which earned him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, he recurred on Masters of Sex and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Charles starred in Straight White Men on Broadway and appeared on the movie Framing John DeLorean. Right now, he’s co-starring in Showtime’s limited series, The Loudest Voice.
