Perry Mason: HBO limited series casts Juliet Rylance, Robert Patrick, Stephen Root and 2 more
Perry Mason, the upcoming HBO limited series from Team Downey, has added five actors to its cast, which is led by Matthew Rhys and John Lithgow.
Juliet Rylance (McMafia) was cast in a series regular role. Meanwhile, Andrew Howard (The Oath), Eric Lange (Narcos), Robert Patrick (True Blood), and Stephen Root (Barry) are set to play recurring roles in Perry Mason, reports Deadline.
The series is set in a thriving 1931 Los Angeles. While the rest of the country is struggling through the Great Depression, Los Angeles is flourishing amidst an oil boom, the Olympics, and the growing motion picture business. Then, a child kidnapping goes very wrong. When Mason (Rhys) gets drawn into the case, his search for answers reveals the city’s seedy underbelly while possibly representing his own redemption.
Rylance will portray Della Street, legal secretary to Lithgow’s E.B. Jonathan. While she has the skills to rise to the top of the corporate ladder at any modern-day company, her professional opportunities are limited by the times.

Howard and Lange play Detective Ennis and Detective Holcomb, respectively, LAPD homicide detectives who intimidate and buck the rules to get their way.
Patrick will depict Herman Baggerly, a major force in Southern California industry who hires Perry Mason and E.B. Jonathan to complete their own investigation into the kidnapping separate from the LAPD.
Finally, Root, who recently earned an Emmy nomination for his role as Monroe Fuches on Barry, will play Maynard Barnes, the confident District Attorney who is equally good at glad-handing or intimidating people.
Series showrunners Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald will write Perry Mason, which is based on characters originated by Erle Stanley Gardner. Tim Van Patten will direct. All three will serve as executive producers alongside Team Downey’s Robert and Susan Downey, who developed the show, as well as others.
The cast of Perry Mason continues to bring in an impressive roster of talent. In addition to Rhys, Lithgow, and these latest additions, actors like Tatiana Maslany, Shea Whigham, Nate Corddry, Jefferson Mays, and Lily Taylor will appear in the series.
Given the starry cast and the gritty premise, the series already looks like it could be a winner for HBO. It will be interesting to see if the series takes a throwback approach to its story, adopting the aesthetic of classic whodunits like The Maltese Falcon, or if it tells its story from a more modern perspective.
