Star Trek: Picard trailer premieres at Comic Con, plus TNG reunions

The CBS All Access Star Trek: Picard series has dropped its first full length trailer at San Diego Comic Con, promising a new adventure and returning favorites.

Remember a few months ago when classic Star Trek: The Next Generation cast members like Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis claimed to have not been contacted to make appearances in CBS All Access’ highly anticipated Star Trek: Picard series? That was obviously a complete lie, but not an unexpected one.

I think many people were skeptical, knowing full well the secrecy with which many high profile productions are shrouded in order to elicit the biggest, buzziest reactions from audiences. Big budget genre productions like Game of Thrones, Westworld, Star Wars, and Marvel routinely employ the strategy of keeping production and plot details tightly under wrap until, and even after, release.

The spoiler taboo is so real.

With the release of the first full length trailer for Star Trek: Picard (below) comes the revelation that Star Trek alums Jeri Ryan and Brent Spiner both make appearances in the series, checking in on Picard as he sets out on an epic mission to save an exceptional young woman who comes to him for help. Her origins are mysterious, but her connection to Jean-Luc is unquestionable.

The trailer is action packed, thoughtful, and intriguing—capped off at its climax with a shocking glimpse of a Borg ship that appears to be under construction. In the final moments, we hear Picard say wistfully, “I don’t want the game to end.”

Here we learn that Picard has rebuilt Data—or rather Data 2.0, the original having sacrificed himself at the end of Star Trek: Nemesis in order to save his crewmates and the world from certain destruction.

It was revealed at Comic Con that Data and Seven of Nine aren’t the only characters making appearances in the new series. According to Syfy, Jonathan Frakes’ William Riker and Marina Sirtis’ Deanna Troi will both be returning, as will Jonathan Del Arco who played the Borg drone Hugh.

Originally rumored for release in the Fall of this year, the trailer announces Picard is set for release in early 2020.
