Light as a Feather season 2 premiere recap: …Lost as Eden
By Wade Wainio
Hulu’s Light as a Feather returns with McKenna bearing the curse. Not only may she need Violet’s help, but she grudgingly comes to understand Violet’s problem.
In season 1 of Light as a Feather, Violet Simmons (Haley Ramm) seemed downright sinister at times, and she may have been sometimes. However, the season 2 premiere strongly hints that her motives for passing on a curse were complicated. Of course, the strange curse in question is conveyed through the slumber party game, “Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board,” wherein participants are supposed to levitate off the ground.
The twist here is that Violet predicted participant’s deaths before they’d float, and the predictions were eerily accurate. Those who died are Olivia Richmond (Peyton List) and Candace Preston (Ajiona Alexus). In addition, Isaac Salcedo (Brent Rivera) was placed in a coma by kissing Violet and Henry Richmond (Dylan Sprayberry) went missing.
Violet is in jail awaiting trial after McKenna and the spirit of her sister Jennie Brady (Liana Liberato) thwarted her. However, in that process, McKenna now bears the strange curse. McKenna tries dealing with it normally, but even a $175-an-hour therapist, Dr. Schwartz (Christine Horn) isn’t enough to restore normalcy. In fact, while in the therapy session, a Rorschach test image on the wall seemingly comes to life, frightening McKenna.

The visitor
To find real answers, McKenna visits Violet in jail, to discuss the curse and to understand her choices. Violet refers to McKenna’s condition as “the chrysalis,” and doesn’t elaborate on it very much, other than to suggest it will only get worse.
Later, McKenna meets her boyfriend, Trey (Jordan Rodrigues), and they discuss ways in which they bent the truth to police. In reality, the story of Violet isn’t simply about her being a kidnapper.
We also briefly see that, while incarcerated, Violet has been getting along with a fellow inmate named Bailey (Stevie Lynn Jones). Violet says she’s optimistic about her kidnapping trial. This surprises Bailey, given the overwhelming evidence against her.
Normalcy?
Light as a Feather doesn’t solely focus on McKenna’s curse (though it’s never far away). Alex Portnoy (Brianne Tju) also survived season 1. She has non-magic curse problems, including her sister April (Alisa Allapach), who shows up here and there to keep her sister away from drugs (at their parent’s request).
April even attends Isaac’s party with Alex, slightly embarrassing them both. On the bright side, Alex develops a crush on party crasher Peri (Adriyan Rae). However, rather awkwardly, April lies about being in college, suggesting an age gap.
Meanwhile, McKenna makes out with Trey, but she has terrifying hallucination about his face being disfigured! Then, as if psychic, Violet violet calls her, discussing McKenna’s panic attack, and to discuss more specifics about “the chrysalis.”
Apparently, those carrying the curse will lose hair, teeth, eyelashes, and who knows what else, until the curse’s thirst for lives is satisfied. Violet also says her loved ones won’t be safe, either. Sure enough, McKenna is obviously haunted by some malevolent force. As she walks a street at night, all of the streetlights go out and she faints.
Shocks
Later, McKenna’s mother (Robyn Lively) is visibly upset that she’s been speaking to Violet, who had caused so much trouble in season 1. Understandably, if Mack is seen as too buddy-buddy with Violet, it could jeopardize the case against her. Either way, the curse rudely hits McKenna’s mom, who gets electrocuted by a frayed electrical cord and what looks like spilled water and milk! Then, to clarify that it truly was magical, a butterfly lands on the spilled milk. It’s apparent that Mack’s mom survives. However, it’s enough to prompt Mack to call Violet again, who insists that she can’t help her from inside prison.
