Light as a Feather season 2, episode 2 recap: …Free as a Bird

This episode of Hulu’s Light as a Feather sees Violet out of jail, but is she fully reformed? Also, can McKenna avoid following her footsteps?

Previously on Light as a Feather, Violet Simmons (Haley Ramm) told McKenna (Liana Liberato) that she can help her address the Chrysalis curse, but not from prison. So in this episode, McKenna and Alex (Brianne Tju ) end up dropping the charges and recanting their previous allegations against her. It’s a decision that puts additional strain on Trey (Jordan Rodrigues) later on, as McKenna initially conceals this info from him.

It’s a bit sad, too, as Trey was even applying at colleges near her school. However, we see why Mack wants Violet’s help. At one point, a family photo she’s looking at gets all creepy, with normal humans transforming into skeletons.

Alex doesn’t like McKenna’s decision to drop charges against Violet, noting that she killed Candace (Ajiona Alexus) and Olivia (Peyton List). Mack is an understanding sort, though, and flips it around on Alex. She notes how Alex had killed Violet in a bath tub, and was only saved by her curse. Mack also brings up her sister Jennie, who died from health complications brought on by Alex’s pills.

Soon after this argument, Mack hallucinates butterflies smashing through some glass. It doesn’t deter her from recanting her allegations against Violet, which Alex follows suit on. For their confessions, they both are sentenced to provide community service (and, oddly enough, Violet will be right alongside them).

Elf dancing and mausoleum mix ups

Light as a Feather soon has Violet showing up at McKenna’s house. Though it’s awkward at first, Violet says she owes Mack for getting rid of the Chrysalis curse. Unfortunately, it was just passed on to Mack!

Things get even more awkward when Alex meets Violet, after Violet says, “I’m really glad you dropped those charges.” It sounds more like gloating than genuine appreciation. In fact, season one made Violet seem nasty even apart from any curse upon her.

It’s not all complete drama, though. We get to see Alex’s Christmas elf dance routine, which her love interest Peri (Adriyan Rae) witnesses. It’s a cute little embarrassing moment. Of course, it does lead to another serious discussion, this time involving Alex’s dance career. As we saw last season, she was kicked off the dance team after pills were found in her bag. Fortunately for Alex, Peri is sympathetic.

The drama intensifies from there, though. After Violet says “Hi” to Trey on the street, it rattles some negative feelings about the whole situation. Later, when McKenna speaks to him on the phone, she hangs up to deal with a loosening tooth.

Then, of course, Mack has to explain the dropped charges against Violet to her mom (Robyn Lively). Essentially, McKenna has to lie, saying it was her idea to go to the mausoleum on a dare and Violet wasn’t really to blame. Mack has a harder time explaining why she was with her sister’s ashes, however.

A fresh crop of cursed players

As Mack, Violet and Alex do community service, Violet casually mentions some new character’s offenses to Mack. One drove recklessly while drunk, getting away with a lighter punishment due to his rich dad. Another smashed a bottle over someone’s head.  One stabbed her stepbrother in the neck with a protractor, while another lady is dismissed as a “klepto.” They are Sammi (Katelyn Nacon), Ridge (Froy Gutierrez), Luke (Alex Wassabi) and Nadia (Kira Kosarin).

It quickly becomes clear that Violet wants them to play a game of Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board, passing the curse on to them. However, Mack definitely has reservations about the idea.

As hinted at before, Trey and Mckenna seem to break up over her hiding the decision to clear Violet. It’s not clear if it’s totally over, but it’s implied that there may be an irreparable strain. Heck, a supernatural curse will do that to people. Speaking of which, McKenna blacks out due to the curse, randomly getting woken up by a jogger tapping her shoulder. So now, in addition to hallucinations, losing teeth and having endangered loved ones, the curse apparently makes her go in and out of consciousness. Well, isn’t that special?
