Santa Clarita Diet season 3 finale recap: The Cult of Sheila

What should have been the season 3 Santa Clarita Diet finale ended up being the series finale–and we are heartbroken.
Santa Clarita Diet ended the season 3 finale on a cliffhanger. Unfortunately, the unexpected cancellation means we will never know what was to happen if there would have been a fourth season. I know, it sucks. Especially given the way things ended. WE WERE WAITING FOR IT!
As the episode begins, the Hammonds are having their realty launch party which takes an icky turn when Poplovic shows up. He stumbles across the kill den area and it’s safe to say he’s pretty darn excited by what he sees in the freezer.
Earlier in the season, Sheila proposed that Joel consider turning so they could spend eternity together. The idea of forever doesn’t sound too appealing to Joel, and we don’t blame the guy. Being immortal sounds cool and all, but it might be a bit too much. Whatever Joel decides later, he and Sheila get into a fight, and it’s not looking too great.

At the same time, Ron shows up at the party and reveals that he turned two people who are going on an eating spree all over town. Of course, they are, Ron! That’s why Sheila and Joel were trying to stop you.
While Poplovic is roaming around the Hammonds’ home, he runs into Joel–and kidnaps him. It turns out that he thinks Joel is the undead guy and is surprised to see that he bleeds. Sorry Poplovic, you’ve got the wrong person! He soon learns that it’s Sheila that is undead and immediately attacks her when she shows up to save Joel.
With Sheila trapped by a metal rod running through her body and Joel tied up, it’s fortunate that Tommy, Ron, and Jean show up to rescue them. And just like that, they take down Popolovic and make their escape.
Sheila and Joel come home to learn that Abby and Eric were dealing with their own mess. Poplovic’s men, who are now undead as well, showed up to cause trouble. But with Abby’s newfound badassness, she manages to kill both of them–and ends the night cuddling with Eric. FINALLY! We’ve been waiting for this to happen.
In the final moments of Santa Clarita Diet ever, Joel reveals that he is ready to be turned by Sheila. He wants to spend forever with her, and can’t imagine doing anything else. But before Sheila can do anything, Mr. Ball Legs jumps on Joel’s shoulder…goes into his ear…and kills him.
This leaves Sheila with only one choice–to bite him. Moments after her bite, Joel opens his eyes and says “Hi”. And…the scene cuts to black. This is literally the moment Santa Clarita Diet fans had been waiting for, and we’ll never see where the story could have gone from there.

It’s so unfair. SO UNFAIR. Sigh. I would have loved to see what an undead Sheila and Joel day would be like. But it looks like we’ll have to rely on our imaginations and fan fiction for that.
