Yellowstone: Dabney Coleman guests in season 2 finale, Karen Pittman will recur in season 3
Yellowstone’s final episode of its second season will feature Dabney Coleman as Kevin Costner’s father, and Karen Pittman was cast in a recurring role for the cable hit’s third season.
The season finale of the second season of Yellowstone will air on Wednesday, Aug. 28 and will feature a very special guest star. Deadline reports that Dabney Coleman will appear in a flashback as John Dutton Sr. the father of Kevin Costner’s character John Dutton. A first look at Coleman’s character can be seen in the photo below.
Coleman is a noted character actor famous for roles in films like WarGames, 9 to 5, and On Golden Pond. More recently he played Commodore Louis Kaestner on Boardwalk Empire.
It hasn’t been announced if Coleman will appear in more than a single episode of Yellowstone. However, the flashbacks are often one of the most satisfying parts of the series, filling in the characters’ backstories and explaining their foibles. Coleman’s presence will no doubt deepen that part of Yellowstone further.

In addition, Karen Pittman (The Morning Show) will recur in the third season of the series as a character named Willa Hays. According to Deadline, Willa is the CEO of MetroCapital and is smart, confident, intimidating, and sharp. Willa is a shrewd businesswoman who’s used to getting exactly what she wants, and what she wants on Yellowstone is to make John Dutton an offer he can’t refuse.
Pittman has some great television credits under her belt, including in the shows Luke Cage, NOS4A2. and the upcoming AppleTV+ series The Morning Show.
Paramount Network announced the season 3 renewal of Yellowstone on the day its second season premiered. The cabler’s bet doesn’t seem to be misplaced as the show continues its ratings winning streak. Yellowstone is cable’s most watched series of the summer and, in comparison to season 1, is up across all key demographics.
With the no-doubt explosive season finale airing next week, the speculation and excitement over the start of season 3 can begin.
