Netflix is apparently confident that The Witcher will be a success, as it orders season 2 ahead of its initial release.

Based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is set to premiere for Netflix on December 20, 2019. On November 13th, Netflix announced that a 2nd season will follow in 2021.

Although season 2 lacks a definite release date, we know each season will consist of 8 episodes. Season 1 will feature the following main cast: Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Freya Allan as Princess Ciri, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Jodhi May as Queen Calanthe, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson as King Eist Tuirseach, Adam Levy as Mousesack, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia de Vries, Mimi Ndiweni as Fringilla Vigo, Therica Wilson-Read as Sabrina Glevissig and Emma Appleton as Princess Renfri.

The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter, who hunts just about every monster under the sun. In The Official Witcher Wiki at Gamepedia, the character says the following: “A manticore, wyvern, fogler, aeschna, ilyocoris, chimera, leshy, vampire, ghoul, graveir, were-wolf, giant scorpion, striga, black annis, kikimora, vypper… so many I’ve killed.”

The many iterations of Geralt

In addition to Sapkowski’s book series, The Witcher”has had success as a video game, with The Witcher, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt all featuring Geralt (voiced by Doug Cockle in English and Jacek Rozenek in Polish). Also, prior to being played by Henry Cavill in the upcoming series, Geralt was played by Michał Żebrowski in The Hexer movie.

It doesn’t end there, however. Geralt can also be found in the Dark House Comics series written by Paul Tobin and illustrated by Joe Querio. These include House of Glass, Fox Children, and Killing Monsters.

Finally, it should be noted that GamesRadar ranked him as the 6th best hero in video game history, ahead of Tomb Raider‘s Laur Croft yet behind Commander Shepard of the Mass Effect series. While this may just be one gamer’s preferences, it’s nevertheless a sign that Geralt’s made his impact. The Witcher Netflix series will likely only broaden his appeal, and likely expand the universe of other characters as well.
