Jared meets his birth parents and Richard tries to figure out how to deal with life after acquiring Hooli after this week’s episode of Silicon Valley.

Silicon Valley will be sorely missed. Week after week it provides so much hilarity and there’s never a dull moment–and I don’t think there ever has been. There’s a lot going on after Pied Piper’s acquisition of Hooli, and I think it’s safe to say everyone is in over their heads.

At some point, Monica attends a Women in Tech event, one that she was not even invited to and tries to talk on a panel. Let’s just say that her presence was underwhelming for the crowd, and instead a coder from Pied Piper is asked to talk instead of her.

There are some gender dynamics that pop up in this episode specifically with Monica. The entire series she’s just been one of the dudes, and it’s never really occurred to anyone to think outside of that mindset. But in this episode, Richard asks Amanda to do something that’s out of the norms for how we view Monica.

He asks if Monica can talk over Foxhole which is an adult site for the military. They don’t want to put a male face to the whole ordeal, so Monica is meant to go to alleviate any tensions that may arise. Instead,

Monica pushes the female coder from Pied Piper to take on that responsibility in order to impress the Laurie Bream.

It’s all in hopes of manipulating others to get a seat on the panel. And she totally succeeds–even though she has no reason to. Too bad she’s kicked off the panel before it ever really begins.

Meanwhile back at the Pied Piper offices, Richard’s dealing with absorbing Hooli, which involves being the boss of his old boss, Ethan. Now, Ethan is not a nice guy at all to Richard.

He’s bringing up old mistakes that Richard made or sharing embarrassing pictures of him. At some point, enough is enough for Richard and he stands up to Ethan (thanks to a video Dinesh showed him about being an alpha).

Once Richard punches Ethan in the face, there’s a drastic change in Ethan’s attitude. He’s so nice to Richard that we’re expecting something ridiculous to happen, but it doesn’t. And that’s because Holden has threatened Ethan about being nice to Richard. And it was scary enough to get him to behave.

The saddest part of this Silicon Valley episode is seeing Jared find his birth parents and going to meet them. They’re pretty horrible to him, and reveal that he was their third child, and they wanted to give him up for a number of stupid, offensive reasons. My heart goes out to him because he’s had a rough go of things lately (even Gwart left him!).

While this episode isn’t exactly thrilling or exciting, it’s still classic Silicon Valley and we can never really get enough of that!
