What True Detective can learn from The Knick
By Josh Hill
The first season of the hit HBO series True Detective was a smash hit and a large part of that had to do with the singular direction of the show. It was deemed to be as cinematic as anything HBO has ever done — outside of Game of Thrones — and that a lot to do with Cary Fukunaga being the only director on the show.

But with the plan now to be handing off episodes to multiple directors, that whole singularity is being thrown into disarray. It’s a real shame too, because HBO was really onto something with the whole one director thing.
Look no further than the Cinemax series The Knick for an example of this. The show is brilliant, and the reason isn’t because it’s some high concept thriller with A-list stars and a huge budget. It’s just a simple show with one Hollywood star directed by one person.
That one person happens to be Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh, but the point is that he’s the only man in charge of the direction. The show has two writers, one director and it’s a stunningly addictive series that hasn’t strayed from the center line it’s on yet.
True Detective is really missing out by moving to more than on director, as the trend may soon lean back in the direction True Detective is sprinting from.
