2015 SAG Awards: True Detective Loses Again
Those who turned into last night’s live broadcast of the SAG awards were treated to a good show that wasn’t overly long and felt, for the most part, sincere. They were also treated to another True Detective defeat. It was never a sure thing that True Detective would take the award, but it was very surprising that it didn’t.
This is True Detective’s third loss this award season. True Detective previously lost in three categories at the Golden Globes and then again at the PGA awards. Even though True Detective became a part of the zeitgeist so quickly, it seems that most awards voters are choosing to forget about it.

It’s unfortunate, but at this point it has almost become expected that True Detective is going to lose. Three award shows totaling five loses doesn’t exactly breed confidence. We were previously worried that the loses would become a trend, but now it looks like we’re seeing it become reality.
It’s not exactly all doom and gloom, however. True Detective did manage to take home a casting award for the pilot, so that’s something. The SAG awards were True Detective’s next best chance at an award this season, its chances again raised by the fact that both Woody Harrelson and Matthew Mcconaughey were nominated in the same category.
When True Detective’s first season was airing, critics could not get enough of Matthew McConaughey as Rust Cohle. His performance helped bring about that “McConaissance,” but that isn’t translating to award wins. This stretches back to the Emmy awards over the summer in which McConaughey also lost.
It’s unlikely at this point that True Detective will walk away with a serious award this season, the SAG awards being something of the nail in coffin. The DGA awards are all that’s left, so let’s hope we see some turn around there.
