True Detective Takes to Instagram for More Teases

The ad campaign for True Detective has proven to be something of a slow burn. Instead of the massive push that many people expected, True Detective has been sticking to more of a steady release. In the past True Detective released key image posters as well as motion posters via social media, and now that trend continues.

More from HBO

True Detective has released a number of very short teaser clips via Instagram featuring the four leads. In case you need a reminder, that includes Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, and Taylor Kitsch. Each clip features the patented True Detective tortured look paired with a character quote.

So far, True Detective has been promoting characters above all else. In fact, in all of the promotional material released so far there has been no mention of plot. In fact, we haven’t even heard a single character speak. Eventually all of these teases will lead to a full trailer, but the path that HBO and True Detective have chosen to follow thus far is an interesting one.

The plot of True Detective season two has been taking a serious backseat so far. That may mean that the second season of True Detective will be about character development more than anything else. True Detective’s first season had trouble handling character development and plot momentum, eventually leading to a disappointing ending.

All we can hope for right now is that the characters of True Detective’s second season will be worthy of this attention. Rust and Marty were great, complex characters, but it was obvious that most of the work went into the two of them. With two more leads than the first season and a perceived greater focus on their development, it’s possible that True Detective’s second season can blow the first season away.
