Could Idris Elba Join Matthew McConaughey in The Dark Tower?
Idris Elba has been named as the front-runner for an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower
A few days ago Idris Elba, after having worked with Cary Fukunaga on Beasts of no Nation, joked about wanting to be in True Detective. Although there is no sign of that actually happening, he has been moving closer into the True Detective orbit. Especially if today’s news is anything to go by.

According to Deadline, Idris Elba is very close to playing Roland Deschain, the main character in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. We previously reported that Matthew McConaughey was in talks for a major role in the movie, but that it would most likely be as either the hero or the villain. As of right now, it looks like McConaughey will be taking the villainous role of The Man in Black.

Basically what we’re close to having here is a classic five degrees of True Detective. Although Idris Elba would be perfect for True Detective, there is still something compelling to having him square off against McConaughey in The Dark Tower. The combination of Elba and McConaughey would most likely be enough to propel the movie forward, regardless of whether it ends up being good or bad.
Odds are that it will be bad, though. Stephen King novels have a tendency to be, well, not so great. There have been a few excellent ones here and there, such s Misery, but they’re more the exception to the rule. The Dark Tower is Stephen King’s only series, and its dark fantasy world should lend itself well to a movie adaptation.
Next: True Detective won't be at The Golden Globes either.
It’s worth pointing out that neither Matthew McConaughey nor Idris Elba have actually officially signed on for it yet.
