Should True Detective Season Three be Based on True Events?
The first two seasons of True Detective took inspiration from real life, but should season three follow the same path?
Without actual being a true crime series, True Detective has helped pave the way for the resurgence of that genre. Nic Pizzolatto, as the man behind the series, has taken inspiration from actual events. Throughout the first two seasons of True Detective there are nuggets of truth to be found, from the actual crime that inspired season one to the city that shaped Vinci in season two.

Season three is a long way away, and there are currently no hints as to which direction it will take. It’s obvious that Pizzolatto is attracted to true crime stories and shaping them into something his own, so when looked at it one way it is a forgone conclusion that True Detective season three will feature some elements of real life.

When looked at it another way, especially considering how poorly season two did, it feels like it could be the perfect time for a change. Season three could either dial back its relation to true crime or it could cut it entirely. Either one could create something different enough to separate it from season two.
Without knowing a single plot detail about season three it is difficult to foresee what shape it’s going to take. HBO and True Detective like to keep the lid for as long as possible, after all.
Next: Discovery's new series is going after True Detective.
It will be exciting to see the form of season three and if Pizzolatto has altered his process post-season two.
