How Delayed will True Detective Season Three Actually be?

True Detective season three may premiere later than expected if recent comments are anything to go on.

The tipping point for HBO and True Detective must have come, because there is no other conceivable reasons that Doug Lombardo would publicly take the blame for True Detective season two otherwise. Being thrust under the spotlight again hasn’t done season two any favors, but at least Lombardo’s admission of guilt took some of the sting out of the whole thing.

The gist is that he rushed season two into production. Considering now that True Detective was off the air for more than a year, that puts season three’s situation into greater doubt. Lombardo said that he wouldn’t do that again, and doing so in the first place meant that he had “failed.” With no pressure behind him to hit a specific air date, Nic Pizzolatto conceivably has as long as he wants to prep season three.

We were originally imagining a 2017 premiere for True Detective season three, a break which would be longer than the one between the first two seasons. Taking Lombardo’s comments into consideration, True Detective season three may not happen until the end of 2017 or early 2018. That is, of course, if Pizzolatto continues on his own.

Which he probably won’t.

With a writer’s room, something which most series have, Pizzolatto would have the backing to get season three out of the door sooner. Hiring multiple writers makes a 2017 air date more likely. Perhaps even early 2017, beating Fargo to the punch.

Next: True Detective has been nominated for a PGA.

Having an official at HBO talk about the failures of True Detective season two is a big deal. Now that it’s out in the open — and fans have someone to blame — it might make moving on easier. Whether that will be in  2017 or later has yet to be seen, but anything could happen at this point.
