House of Cards Renewed, but Still no Word on True Detective
House of Cards was renewed for a new season ahead of its unaired fourth.
Of the major current dark dramas, True Detective is being left behind. Fargo was renewed two months ago while it was still airing. Now, Netflix has announced that House of Cards will be back for a fifth season even before the fourth season airs. That’s a lot of Frank Underwood to look forward to. Two critically acclaimed dramas have announced their plans for the future.

We end up having to ask, once again, what about True Detective? Except in terms of awards, House of Cards and True Detective aren’t exactly competitors. They are on two entirely different platforms, after all, and one is available for binging the moment it premiers. We know that Nic Pizzolatto has at least one more season in the works — his deal with HBO practically guarantees it.

At this point, however, HBO is unlikely to announce anything until the brunt of the work is finished. We might not even know about it until the majority of the cast is figured it, which is different from how season two did it. It is, in fact, different from how most series do it.
It’s unlikely that HBO is worried about Fargo and House of Cards’ earlier renewals. If True Detective season three is up to snuff, it could easily be a huge comeback and practically take care of itself. HBO and Nic Pizzolatto just have to concern themselves with creating the best season of True Detective that they possibly can.

Or, you know, just be better than season two. Most people would probably settle for that.
