Will True Detective Season Three Have Multiple Directors?
Will True Detective season three continue in the vein of season two, or go back to a single director?
Have multiple directors helm a television series is a completely normal thing to do. In fact, it was strictly out of the ordinary for Cary Fukunaga to have directed the entire first season of True Detective. That level of commitment can make the actual filming easier because there is no need to hand it off after a couple of episodes. It’s also likely why Fukunaga feels some level of ownership over season one.

Not many have come forward to talk about working on True Detective season two. The only director to take about the process was John Crowley, and he didn’t speak all too kindly about being a “director for hire.” While it makes sense from an outsider’s perspective for True Detective to have a single director for a single anthology season, Fargo has not run into True Detective’s troubles and has had multiple directors.

Just like the major stars that True Detective likes to go after, getting a director to commit for an entire season is no easy task. Multiple directors brig flexibility but also instability in that there isn’t enough time for them to leave their mark.
If True Detective were to ever return to having a single director, it would make the most sense for Cary Fukunaga to do it. Fans are already connected to Fukunaga’s work, and even though he won’t be back for season three he is open to a return at some point. Until then, there’s no reason to think that season three will stray from the current path.
