Geoff Johns is heading to the DC Universe with a new Stargirl series.

At San Diego Comic Con today Johns surprised fans by revealing he would not only be producing Stargirl but also writing it. While the Titans trailer was met with a lot of division among viewers, it seems like everyone can agree this is the most exciting news from the DC Universe today.

Stargirl, otherwise known as Courtney Whitmore, was actually created by Johns in the comics. This alone should give fans faith that a television series helmed by him will her justice. Also, the fact that Johns will have a more hands-on role with production since he stepped down from DC Entertainment to be more involved with the creative decisions.

The series will follow Courtney during her high school years as she assembles the Justice Society of America. However, unlike Legends of Tomorrow which focused on the adult version of the characters, Stargirl will primarily consist of young superheroes.

In a press release from the DC Universe, the new show is described as a “fun, exciting, and unpredictable series”. Based on the short description, it sounds like the series will have a more light-hearted tone compared to the live-action Titans. In fact, Stargirl already looks like it will be unique compared to the other shows on the DC Universe.

Alongside Geoff Johns, the series will be produced by the usual suspects: Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. This comes as no surprise considering Berlanti has become to go-to guy when it comes to DC Comics adaptations. However, there is no word yet on who will serve as the showrunner and who will direct the pilot.

Fans won’t have to wait that long for the first episode either, with DC Universe expecting a premiere date sometime in 2019. Most likely casting is already underway and there’s no doubt Geoff Johns has already begun working on a script.
