Today at Comic-Con, news broke that Rebecca Romijn is joining the cast of CBS All-Access’ Star Trek: Discovery as the first officer “Number One.”

TrekCore reports that Romijn will play the officer, who was little-seen in the original Star Trek series, opposite Anson Mount in the upcoming second season of Star Trek: Discovery. Mount will play Christopher Pike, captain of the starship Enterprise.

Star Trek fans will recognize “Number One” as a character who appeared in “The Cage,” Star Trek‘s original pilot before William Shatner was cast as Captain Kirk. “The Cage” never aired in its entirety,  but parts of it were later seen in flashbacks during an episode of Star Trek called “The Menagerie.”

The character of “Number One,” originally played by Majel Barrett, was never seen again because, at the time, test audiences and NBC execs didn’t like the idea of a female officer.

Fortunately, times have changed and nowadays a female first officer should be easily accepted by fans.

Romijn has had a number of well-regarded movie and television roles. She is still recognized for her turn as Mystique in the X-Men movies and has also starred in the TV series Ugly Betty and The Librarians.

Although “Number One” never appeared on-screen in Star Trek again, she has shown up in the series’ comics and novels. In these iterations, she’s been given several different names.

It will be interesting to see if Discovery decides to refer to Romijn’s character as something other than “Number One,” and if so what that will be.

In addition to this casting news, a trailer for the show’s second season debuted today at Comic-Con.
