Stephen King adaptation The Outsider picked up by HBO, Ben Mendelsohn to star
The Outsider, a supernatural drama based on Stephen King’s bestseller of the same name, has been ordered to series by HBO.
Ben Mendelsohn will star in and produce the 10-episode limited series, reports Deadline. The Outsider will mark his first TV role since he won a Best Supporting Actor Emmy for his turn in Netflix’s Bloodline.
More recently Mendelsohn has been seen in a series of films including Star Wars: Rogue One, Ready Player One, and the newest adaptation of Robin Hood. He will also appear in the upcoming Captain Marvel.
Jason Bateman (Ozark, Arrested Development) will executive produce the series alongside creator Richard Price (The Night Of, The Deuce) and others. Bateman is set to direct the series’ first two episodes and possibly guest star. Meanwhile, Price will write the series.

The Outsiders tells the story of an investigation into the gruesome murder of a local boy. The case seems by the book but as a supernatural force makes itself known, the seasoned cop and unorthodox investigator working the case start to question what is actually real.
The project’s studio, MRC optioned the book earlier in the year and hired Price to take on writing duties at that time. Price wrote the pilot script before Mendelsohn and Bateman, along with his company, Aggregate Films, got involved.
Stephen King’s work is a perpetual source of new TV and movie adaptations, but he seems to be on an especially hot streak lately. Last year, the big screen adaptation of his novel IT was a hit at the box office. A sequel is currently in the works.
Also, Mr. Mercedes just received a third season pick up, The Stand is coming to CBS All-Access, and In the Tall Grass is coming to Netflix.
Furthermore, Hulu released the series Castle Rock over the summer based on King’s various stories set in the titular town. Finally, a new adaptation of Pet Sematary is set to hit movie theaters in April 2019.
HBO could find great success with The Outsider given the talent that is involved both in front of and behind the camera.
