Does True Detective’s Loss at the Golden Globes Signal a Trend?

By now, it is probably common knowledge that True Detective performed poorly at the Golden Globes. The Golden Globes were True Detective’s first shot at an award this season, and with that opportunity passed that now leaves the SAG and PGA awards.

We recently examined True Detective’s chances at the SAG’s, but perhaps it’s time to re-think award season in light of True Detective’s Golden Globes loss. We had pinned Golden Globes as being the best shot for True Detective but Fargo ended up being the real winner.

Where does that leave True Detective? Its chances at the upcoming SAG awards were never stellar — it’s only nominated in a single category in which Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will once again compete.

However, after last night True Detective’s chances at a SAG award actually seem better than they once did.

True Detective is nominated in Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. After Billy Bob Thorton took Best Actor for Fargo at the Golden Globes, it would be a little worrisome if the actors were once again competing. But this time, they’re not.

Thorton is nominated in Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries. Because nobody can actually agree on whether or not True Detective is a drama or a miniseries.  If it was surprising that True Detective didn’t at least take home Best Actor at the Golden Globes, it would be a huge upset if they didn’t grab it at the SAG awards.

But so far, Fargo is owning this award season in a way that we didn’t see coming. Fargo and True Detective are both nominated for PGA awards, but they are again separated. This is turning out to be an even more competitive season than originally thought, and it was already pretty great.

Now we can only hope that True Detective can turn it around at the SAG awards.
