Nic Pizzolatto’s Deal with HBO Might Only Include One Season of True Detective

Nico Pizzolatto’s expanded relationship with HBO might only end up bringing us a single True Detective season.

When it was revealed that Nic Pizzolatto had signed a new contract with HBO expanding his relationship with the network through 2018, it seems obvious at the time that it would include multiple new seasons of True Detective. Now that some of the dust has settled from Michael Lombardo’s recent comments, hoping for multiple seasons feels like wishful thinking.

Knowing that True Detective season three has not moved into production — publicly, at least — makes a 2016 premiere highly unlikely. 2017 feels about right for True Detective season three, but at that point there would only be one year left in this new contract. Assuming that Nic Pizzolatto does not re-up for a third time, that would give us a single new season of True Detective.

If that’s destined to be the case, why not just sign on for a new season instead of a multi-year agreement?

The answer to that question is not easily gleamed. What is most likely is that Pizzolatto wants to work on other projects that will also run on HBO, though it’s difficult to say what his involvement with those projects would be. On to of that, it’s also difficult to say what his involvement with True Detective season three will actually be, though we have some ideas of our own on that one.

Next: Matthew McConaughey could return to those whacky Lincoln commercials.

HBO has not announced anything for True Detective season three, and at this point there is no reason to think that they will until it’s fully ready to go into production. Between now and 2018, however, it would be wise to only expect one new season of True Detective.
